The big issue in the recent weeks has be the decision not to indict (definition: formally accuse or charge with a serious crime) Officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown. Although the events leading up to this decision took place in Ferguson, protests against the outcome has spread to all the states. An article in the Burnt Orange Report briefly goes over the different rallies that have taken place in Texas. Personally, I don't believe the killing was an issue of racism. From what I understand, Officer Wilson was defending himself and race was no where in the equation. It's always unfortunate when a life is lost, but I think there are better ways to handle this situation. Prayers go out to the Brown family and the Wilson family alike.

Within the last few weeks, there has been a lot going on in Texas from a political standpoint. As stated in the Burka Blog, voter ID has been rejected, abortion clinics have re-opened, Houston attorneys are trying to subpoena sermons that are against the new equal rights ordinance, and there was another case of Ebola.

The author of the blog briefly reviews these issues and then turns the discussion to the comment section. Most people seem to agree that the Voter ID isn't a huge issue while some say it's a form of disenfranchisement and thus unconstitutional, and the other big issue is Ebola. The other two topics are not delved into as much. I personally don't find voter ID as big of an issue as people make it out to be, I've always been pro life, you shouldn't preach hate at the pulpit, and I pray that Ebola is contained quickly.

The article I decided to blog about this week was one entitled Back-To-School Special: Campus Sexual Assault. It's about a girl who was sexually assaulted in her dorm. Even after reporting him, the accused was able to continue going to the school without punishment. The victim, Emma Sulkowicz, decided then to carry her dorm mattress stating that she wont stop until her rapist is removed from the school.

The article is interesting because this isn't the only case where someone who committed sexual assault of any kind was able to walk away with no punishment. I was raised to respect women, and the numbers I read in the article are just disturbing. I believe more focus needs to go to making our schools safe for women. No one should be afraid to attend a university because of problems like this.
